On critics' verdict: Critics have an important role to play in encouraging good cinema. I don't think it's right for a fellow film maker to review a film. In fact, it's unethical. In his review of Devdas, Rituparno Ghosh rubbished my film. After the review, I sat for three hours and listened to him. I did it because he is a friend and had helped me a lot in Kolkata before the making of Devdas. But that doesn't mean I have to take his criticism seriously. Our views on cinema are very different. When his Chokher Bali was released, I went for the first day first show of the film. Similarly, I also watched Raincoat. But most of the times, Rituparno's film don't work for me. I find them boring.
On wanting to make a film on the physically challenged: It was during the making of Khamoshi that I wanted to make a film on the physically challenged. I had read up two autobiographies of physically challenged people and interacted with people from the Helen Keller Institute. I had even told Seema Biswas that I wanted to make a film on those lines. After making Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas, I thought I needed to move beyond romantic songs and alcoholics: I was tired of making films in the same genre. That was when I thought of making Black.
On the power of silence: My film is lyrical without using any songs. I am basically a very shy and a quiet person. There are moments when you don't need words to communicate. In fact, over the years I have realized that there is lot of honesty in communication between people who are physically challenged. They do not lie. For the hearing impaired, the situation is even more different because they don't have any visible form of disability. They are the real survivors, they never complain: They are the most alive people around.
On Rani as an actress:
In my film, Rani has given a powerful performance in the role of a physically challenged. She shares a wonderful on-screen chemistry with Amitabh Bachchan.
