Roles Apart
Priyanka Chopra has indeed come a long way. And nothing stresses on this streak of success as the varied roles that she is playing today. A scheming villain, a traditional housewife and a docile girl. The feather in her cap, right now, is certainly the first movie Aitraaz.
"I am happy with the kind of response I have received for the movie. And I am happy that I accepted the role. I remember I was very nervous when Abbas-Mustan met me as I was very young then. I had just signed Mujhse Shaadi Karoge," reveals Chopra. "It was a very challenging role this time, and I was very sceptical whether I would be able to pull it off. Luckily, Abbas-Mustan were convinced and they convinced me about it too!" However, the actress doesn't think her villainous act is something Indian women identify with. "Our culture does not allow for these kind of things. Women are brought up on a different values in India."
Going by the number of sizzling performances on the Indian screen, and the upbeat audience response to such films, didn't she feel women were changing their stance today? "I don't think so. I think such films have reached a saturation point. I'm not talking about out-and-out sex films because they have a different audience." Then what explained the barrage of such films hitting the market. "Sexy films are being made because there is a demand for them," Priyanka reasons. "Its all a matter of demand and supply. Now even television is coming out with videos which are even worse than these films." So was she in favour of television censorship? "100 percent," she asserts. "There has to be censorship. If there is censorship on films, there has to be censorship on television because that is a medium which is even more accessible."
Did she think some actresses were crossing the line when it came to exposing on 70mm? "That depends on individual to individual. You can't blame, negate or praise somebody for it.
Everybody has a choice and limit. I think an actress like Mallika Sherawat has a lot of guts. I would never beable to talk the way she does. To talk about anybody the way you want." While her negative role has been much commended, Priyanka has quite a varied line-up coming up soon. "I have Waqt, Barsaat, Karm, Yakeen, Blackmail and Rakesh Roshan's film. Barsaat and Waqt are poles apart from what I have done in Aitraaz. In Barsaat I play a totally Indian, docile girl, very innocent. In Waqt I play a traditional housewife. In Karm it is a total non-glam, no make-up look for me with a lot of scope to perform. With the New Year coming up, one would expect Priyanka to take off on a well deserved holiday. But the workaholic actress has other plans. "My daadi used to say that the New Year's Day is going to reflect what you're going to do for the full year. So you should work on the first day of the New Year," she quips.
