Bollywood's Mr clean
Meet Anil Kapoor in a metacool awtaar. A new look, longer hair and an attitude to boot, but make no mistake for he still is Mr Nice Guy at heart. A trait one especially gets to admire as he jokes around with his fans and signs autographs with genuine enthusiasm.
So what does the 'gentleman' actor has to say about his image? "Boring, isn't it?" he smiles. "Even Salman Khan keeps on telling me 'kuch kar yaar, kisko do thappad hi laga de. You are too clean.' But what to do? I love my wife and if I do anything like this, she'll leave me." So even as he treads the straight path in his real life, in reel life he is all set to venture into the grey. "My next movie Musafir will see me as a grey character, who is surrounded by black ones. Even this new look is because it goes with the movie. This is the most wicked movie I have done till date - it is very erotic, sexy and immensely entertaining," he says.
However, movies are not on the top of the mind of Anil right now, a fact that also explains his almost one-and-a-half year long absence from the big screen. "I usually take small breaks between movies. I am enjoying my life right now and the various roles that come with it. Besides acting, I try to spend time with my children who are at that stage of life when they need their father around. So all in all, I am having a ball," Anil says.
Talking about his children, are they going to follow in their father's footsteps. "They are not interested in acting at all," comes the emphatic answer. "My daughter is going to US for his university while my son is also growing up. The world is tough and very cruel, and I am trying to be their guide."
On the acting front, Anil says that he has his hands full right now. "I have five films right now, that includes a comedy I am doing with Ramgopal Verma and a movie with Dharmesh Darshan. They are all very satisfying," he explains. For an actor who has been in the industry for so long, how does he feel that heroes role has evolved? "Even though our society has changed a lot but there are certain things that always remain the same. So basically, the hero still remains the way he was a decade ago. He is still the guy who is awesome and has quality and talent in equal measure."
And how does he explain the lack of any young talent in Bollywood? "Because people want to see men onscreen," pat comes the reply. "People who were stars 10 years ago are still being liked. They may be in their 30s or 40s but that has not affected their stardom. Also we have not seen some real, good talent of late. Also launching a newcomer takes a lot of talent and is an expensive proposition."
