Amrita's new tango
Six years back when Amrita Arora chucked up her happening job as a veejay on MTV, she'd almost promised herself never to do "televison in a hurry. I thought films deserved all my time and I wanted to concentrate on one thing at a time." Fair enough, only Amrita has returned to her first love once again: televison. This time she shakes a leg with Zayed Khan in the music video of DJ Aqueel's new album. What was it like? "Great. I've known Zayed for a while but didn't know he was such a fantastic dancer. We had a great time shooting the video."
Amrita, a trained Bharat-natyam dancer might have "bunked dance classes as a child" but has been "more or less consistent once I grew up. I realised that being a good dancer is an asset and I couldn't ignore that." Being Ms Twinkle Toes did help Amrita land her first item act, Dilli Ki Sardi in Zameen. "Lots of people told me that I was one of the high points of the film, that I thought was a great compliment for me," remembers Amrita.
A song sequence which changed the way people had seen her before and the bold, brazen image surfaced. "Well, it's weird. I didn't plan it this way at all but after Karan Razdan' Girl Friend and Mahesh Manjrekar's Rakht I think the sexy actress tag stuck to me. I don't know if I should be worried or pleased. Ideally actresses should have no image attached to their name, it restricts your ability a lot. I don't want people to assume that there's nothing more to me than my looks and a great figure."
Amrita who's "here to do good roles" is extremely "excited" about Manjrekar's Deh, co-starring Manjrekar and Dino Morea. "It's the kind of role that will get me appreciated by all the critics. I play the role of a young woman married to a much older man and is sexually unhappy: for a Hindi film to even tackle a subject like this is encouraging, it shows that we've matured."
And Amrita insists that despite the "loads of offers I received after Rakht, I'm trying to be selective." So when she's not reading scripts (like all actresses tend to do), Amrita likes to "pamper myself in a salon, scribble in my fat notebook, watch TV and go shopping for shoes." And Upen Patel? "Right now he's the man I love." Well.
