SRK magic on Madan Mohan's beats
Yash chopra, the Producer-director Bollywood mogul Yash Chopra returns after a seven-years sabbatical (his last directorial feature was Dil To Pagal Hai in '97) with a brand-new romance, made mostly in India this time. Veer-Zaara opens on November 12, and stars Chopra's favourite hero Shah Rukh Khan with Rani Mukherjee - a Yash Chopra regular - and current flavour Preity Zinta.

Incidentally, Chopra has used 11 unused compositions of the late Madan Mohan in Veer-Zaara, recreated to suit today's tastes. "It's an intense romance about two people in India and Pakistan, trapped in situations beyond control," he says. "We needed a certain kind of music. Madan Mohanji's music has a timeless quality and he had about 500 unused tunes. He has selected a few of them with the help of Sanjiv Kohli, CEO of our company, Yash Raj Films." Kohli's having worked with HMV, the company that marketed the music of Chopra's film for decades, only helped.

Music in a Yash Chopra film is incomplete without Lata Mangeshkar's voice and this time too, she is the only female voice, along with Sonu Nigam, Jagjit Singh and Udit Narayan. For lyrics, Chopra approached Javed Akhtar. "Javed readily agreed. The film's music is in sync with its theme and he is satisfied," says Chopra.

The fact that he never worked with Madan Mohan is a "lasting regret" for Chopra. "But look at it this way - He is working with him now when he's no longer with us."

In fact, Chopra has floated a new record label with this film and he officially launches the music of his film today. Knowing how well the music of his films sell, it's probably a good enough start.
